“Those hungry are not satisfied by just talking and hearing about the food, what they need is to eat. In the same way, just talking about success and happiness will never bring forth the same; we have to work hard towards achieving it”.
Honorable Director Sir, Respected Deans, Esteemed faculty members and my loving, brilliant and of course intellectual ladies and gentlemen.
Kuzuzangpo and let me join Mr/Ms. Namgay in warmly welcoming you all to this very solemn assembly session. This is my very first and may be the last opportunity and today, I stand here as a speaker with great ecstasy but finely blended with a bit of nervousness. Nevertheless, delivering a speech in front of great men and women in this great hall undoubtedly is a great opportunity and this very moment would remain as ineradicable memory and perhaps, even more than that it would also remain as a “Swansong” in my life.
Frankly speaking, I have never made speeches in front of formal and intellectual gatherings of this kind before, except during those dim years of my kindergarten. During those years of my primary schooling, delivering a speech in front of just 80-90 students itself was a heart-throbbing experience and to these days it continue to be the same for me. Indeed, it is the greatest drawback with me. Facing a crowd is almost like a deadly torture and a ghastly experience too.
But still then, today seems to be the most opportune time after this prolonged period and I have snatched this very opportunity and indeed it is the great privilege to stand in front of this august gathering at this very podium not just merely as the speaker for the sake of speaking something but as far as I am concerned, I am sure and I must say that my speech would inculcate the sense of hard work and though my very speech today may not be very inspiring but at the same time, it may not be lullaby-like dragging you into slumber from the very fresh morning itself. Very positively, I hope you all would passionately listen to me for few minutes.
But before, I really go on to my speech for today, let me not forget to introducemyself because for a couple of years now, we have been together, yet to many, I may be a total stranger. I am Ugyen Tenzin, Semester VIII (Tourism).
Candidly, I have neither any stimulating topic sufficiently to interest you all nor any specific topic really to talk upon but my speech would largely revolve around “HARDWORK AND THE SUCCESS”
We often say that nothing is impossible for a willing heart but we also should be reminded that if it is not impossible then, it is not that easy too. Therefore, here comes the question of hard work. Hardwork is the input and the success, its result. There is no alternative way to success. Hardwork is the one and the only one to achieve success. Hard work solidly grounded and deeply rooted on unfailing commitment, dedication and sincerity is the hall mark of many great peoples success.
A man who does not want badly to do a thing will make any number of excuses for not doing it. If, however, he is determined to achieve a specific goal, he will overcome the most formidable and insurmountable obstacles. To be successful, we have to toil hard, lift the load, rack our brains, strain our every nerve and sweat it out so as to ensure a worthy goal. Success definitely is not a matter of the sheer luck as we generally think of rather it depends entirely on adequate preparation, will power, perseverance and the hard work.
Self confidence, vibrating enthusiasm, resoluteness, perseverance and above all hard work and positive attitudes constitutes the cornerstone of our success and happiness. We can decide our own destiny and fashion our fate by our own effort and hard work.
Life is never the paved road or the life is not the bed of roses but the ground reality is that life is full of ups and downs and indeed life is a fine blend of tragedies and comedies as the world’s greatest dramatist William Shakespeare puts it. We can’t expect success in our every endeavor at all times and often we encounter with failure and sometimes most unexpectedly. Though one meets with the failure occasionally but one has yet to go on. It is said that ‘the glory of life is not in never falling but the true glory lies in rising every time we fall.’
There had been many exemplary and great people in the past, there are many at the present and there will be lot more in the future and those great people whom we and the whole world consider them as the great was born ordinary like every one of us here but they could perform extraordinary feats. Now, the question is that HOW and WHAT made them to achieve such greatness? It is neither the play of the fate/kismet nor for any other reason but it was because of hard work and perseverance which made them great that the whole world bow at them. So, we too have equal potential as them and the only thing we need to develop is the hard work and the persevering quality within us.
I mean that the greatness in them is not something inborn but the optimistic and the pessimistic attitude in them makes the difference because it is said that “an optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity but a pessimist sees calamity in every opportunity”
Dalai Lama, who is being leveled as the living Avalokitishvara (The God of Compassion) proclaimed, “The thought that we cannot compete with others is the first step towards failure”. This kind of pessimistic thought and attitude always make one succumb to the failure in our every endeavor which possibly can have a negative repercussion on our life.
Also, the greatest freedom fighter of India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi once remarked,
“There are two kinds of people in the world
Those who do the work and
Those who take the credit
Try to be in the first group
Because there is less competition there”
Perhaps, this is what exactly happens today. The statement crystal clearly mentions that there are more number of people going after fame and popularity and enjoying on the fruits of others’ hard and painful labour than those doing the work themselves. So Mahatma Gandhi’s advice is that to be in the first group and since there is less number, obviously the competition is lesser.
Dear friends, remember! Life is not as rewarding as we wish it to be so hard work is the inevitable part of our living today. If we work hard today, we can reap the fruits of it throughout our life. I feel that as far as we have got a stomach/tummy to feed on, our life’s struggle will never come to an end and perhaps, we have to work even more harder than what we actually do now because with the increasing number of educated youths with each passing year and so with the ever soaring competition, we can’t really afford to remain complacent and idle else, we fall the victim of it.
Every single minute is inconceivably precious for us today and we can’t afford to fritter away our precious time at this very juncture. Therefore, rather than engaging in the pettifogging activities which jeopardizes our very future and the life itself, it would be wiser to invest our time and effort in education as it is said that “an investment in knowledge pays you the best interests” and we should never waste the so called precious time because it is said that all the treasures and the riches of the world can’t bring back the lost moment. Therefore, time once lost means lost forever. So if we do not use this very moment judiciously, it is like failing to use a wish fulfilling gem despite holding it in our hands or returning empty-handed from the land full of precious gold.
Bhutan’s apex and the premier educational institutes like GCBS are like the factory where human resources are manufactured, groomed and chiseled and also human resources are produced in quantity and with quality but we should not get rotten ourselves by doing nasty things. It is our sacred responsibility especially the senior friends since we are the first batch representing the GCBS family, and the marketability of the future graduates from the GCBS would definitely depend on us. Therefore, we have an immense role to play both for ourselves and also for the college at large.
We can’t taste the fruit of a thorny tree without being pricked by its thorn. Similarly, if we do not take hardships and struggle now, most surely, we will not have happy and jolly good time in future and otherwise it would be like expecting to have a good harvest when actually you have sown nothing and have done no work in the field or would be like casting a net in dry riverbed. Remember! It is always dark before dawn. So never give up no matter what circumstances are.
Mid semester examinations are almost nearing and hope you all are gearing for it. We should be reminded that there are no shortcuts to success. Therefore, find some time out of no time to study and a time will come uninvited when your hard work and unflagging efforts made towards academic would fructify. Anyway, I would say that a cursory glance at the last moment is never going to help us rather it will bemuse us forgetting everything that we know. Never procrastinate today's work for tomorrow, for tomorrow never ends.
Last but not the least; be reminded that “the present world is for the hard working travelers and not for the merrymakers on the revelers”. You must always hope for the best but also be equally prepared for the worst because the world that we dwell in is so fragile and the competition is cut-throat. Therefore, let us work hard to develop physically, mentally and intellectually and this is the right place and time for us. Let us act now before it becomes too late.
Penultimately, I end up my speech with the quote from the inspiring book titled “Landing on Your Feet” inscripted by Mara Brown, “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire”.
Your honorable director sir, loving and caring faculties, ladies and gentlemen, may I thus, take leave with all due respect. I thank you all. May god bless you and wish all a very enchanting days ahead. Thank you once again for your enduring patience!
**************GOOD LUCK & KADRINCHE****************
